Cover photograph (Copyright © 2009, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): When feline parvovirus jumped species, it gained the ability to infect dogs. The three-dimensional reconstructions between feline (magenta) and canine (cyan) parvoviruses show viruses interacting with Fabs from eight different neutralizing antibodies. The virus-Fab complex structure nearest the dog contains a Fab that binds and neutralizes canine but not feline parvovirus. Within this Fab footprint is one of the two point mutations that determined the altered tropism, suggesting that escape from immune surveillance in cats may have contributed to the species jump to dogs.
